crowd-usflagsThe Gifford Center for Population Studies, located in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis, was created through the generosity of John P. Gifford and Mary Louise Gifford in 1993.

The center encourages interdisciplinary research related to human population studies. Since 2005, the Gifford Center has been a project of the Center for the Study of Regional Change. Its location in the CSRC orients its activities to issues with regional and policy significance to California and especially the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada.

The Gifford Center supports population-oriented convening, publications, and an annual selection of Gifford Faculty Fellows and Gifford Student Scholars.

PIMSA

The deadline for applications is August 1, 2008.

PIMSA encourages the participation of diverse institutions in the United States and Mexico that are interested in researching migration and its impact on health. The primary objective of this call is to provide seed funds for developing projects that will contribute to the knowledge base of migration and health-related issues facing workers of Mexican origin and their families in the United States and Mexico. Results from these studies will be disseminated to researchers and policymakers.  Additionally, this RFP seeks to promote collaborative research at an international level and create long-term linkages between universities in the United States and Mexican research institutions. Ultimately, PIMSA strives to create and sustain a network of researchers and institutions from the United States and Mexico which can inform policymakers on issues related to health and migration.

The Population Council offers a fellowship program to expand training opportunities for population specialists and biomedical researchers. This fellowship is geared toward those in the early stages of their careers, and to those with a demonstrated commitment to remaining in their home countries to build capacity in local institutions, or returning home after working/studying abroad. The Council’s Fred H. Bixby Fellowship Program is a ten-year program that began in January 2007. The program is highly competitive and will offer a limited number of fellowships each year. The Fred H. Bixby fellowships will allow citizens of developing countries to work with experienced mentors in the Council’s network of offices. Fellows will work on projects in the following program areas: HIV and AIDS; Poverty, Gender, and Youth; Reproductive Health.

Donor: This fellowship program is made possible through a generous grant from the Fred H. Bixby Foundation.

The Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch (DBSB) is one of three branches in the Center for Population Research of the NICHD. The branch supports research on the demographic processes of fertility, mortality, and migration and the interrelationships among demographic, social, economic, and cultural processes.

Areas of supported research include fertility and family planning, sexually transmitted disease, family and household demography, mortality and health, population movement, population and environment, and population composition and change. The Branch supports multi- and interdisciplinary research drawing on the clinical, behavioral, and social sciences.

This announcement provides a mechanism to support specialized educational needs within population research. Meeting these needs will advance population research by enhancing the development of interdisciplinary scientists and facilitating interdisciplinary studies, improving the dissemination and use of existing data sets in population research, and advancing the adoption of quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

Applicants may propose educational programs that: (l) facilitate the development of interdisciplinary scientists or the conduct of interdisciplinary science related to population; (2) address the effective dissemination and use of complex data sets; and/or (3) provide broad access to research education and training in the application of specialized or cutting-edge methodologies in population research.
