Project Information

  • The Healthy Youth/Healthy Regions initiative is a collaborative partnership between the UC Davis Center for Regional Change, Sierra Health Foundation and The California Endowment documenting  the connections between improvements in youth well-being and regional prosperity in the nine-county Sacramento Capital Region. Researchers from multiple disciplines will examine four critical areas that affect youth well-being: education, health, employment, and civic engagement. The initiative will produce information to support the strategic efforts of policy-makers, funders, nonprofit organizations and businesses to reduce youth disparities and improve youth well-being in the region. At the conclusion of the two-year study, the Center for Regional Change will provide a set of research-based recommendations regarding investments in youth to promote long-term economic, social and cultural health in the region.

  • The Great Valley in a Decade- On June 17, 2009 from 7:00-7:30pm on KVIE, Jonathan London will appear on a television panel where he discusses the future of youth in the valley.  Encore show is on June 21, 2009 from 6:00-6:30pm, for more information see page five of the KVIE program guide.

  • Youth Voices, Youth Visions- On June 30, 2009 from 4-6pm at the City Hall Galleria, the Sactown Heroes shared their stories of growing up in West Sacramento. Through photographs, videos and storytelling created in partnership with the Healthy Youth Healthy Regions Youth Voices research team, the youth describe the places, people and activities in their lives, and their visions for change in the community. Along with their individual stories, the event premieres a dynamic web-based map that youth have produced to document their voices and their visions. The hope of the Heroes is to inform local decision making and influence efforts to make West Sacramento a healthier place in which to grow up (event flier).

  • Informatics Coordinator Position Available- The Healthy Youth/Healthy Regions team is looking for an informatics coordinator.  Interested parties should apply by June 30, 2009 for full consideration.  Please see the UC Davis Career Opportunities website for more information or to apply.

  • Advisory Committee Meeting – April 28, 2009: Healthy Youth/Healthy Regions Advisory Committee convenes for the first of five meetings over the course of the initiative. The Advisory Committee will play a critical role in the development of the initiative by ensuring that the initiative’s focus is relevant to youth issues in our region, providing expert input on the design and analysis of the study, converting the initiative's findings into action and broadening the reach of the initiative throughout our region and beyond its borders.

  • Youth Voices Team Conducts Spring Fling with West Sacramento Youth: Fifteen Sactown Heroes (pictured below) spent four days of their spring break with UC Davis researchers photographing images and producing videos of places that are important in their lives.  These digital stories will be part of an interactive map of West Sacramento that the youth are creating as part of the HYHR initiative.
