2020 Bradshaw Scholar

Bio

Amy Becker is a PhD candidate at UC Davis in Biomedical Engineering with research focused on the development of x-ray imaging systems for breast cancer diagnosis. She is also interested in connecting science to policy and expanding healthcare access to vulnerable neighbors. As a Bradshaw Scholar, she is working with a nonprofit healthcare organization in Yolo County to support a project on "Food is Medicine" interventions to reduce barriers to healthy eating. CommuniCare Health Centers is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center with a mission to provide medical services to the low-income and uninsured population. They are building a Garden and Outdoor Classroom next to the health center in Woodland and plan to provide cooking classes and diabetes and behavioral health group visits outdoors. Amy will conduct key informant interviews to collect the community opinion on the Garden and Outdoor Classroom in order to illustrate the potential value it will bring to CommuniCare. The long-term goal is to publish this work as qualitative research in collaboration with the UC Davis Center for Healthcare Policy and Research in order to provide a model to other healthcare groups that want to incorporate food into their healthcare approach. Amy is mentored by Edye Kuyper who is the Food Programs Manager at the Hansen Family Health Center in Woodland. You can find out more about the project here: https://www.communicarehc.org/garden/
