Asiya Natekal's research interests lie at the intersection of the built environment and sustainability. She is passionate about the role of the built environment and its impact on its residents.

Asiya worked as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Irvine and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.  In that capacity, she taught courses related to urban planning, sustainable urban design, and spatial analysis. For her GIS course, she developed collaborative curriculum partnering with a community organization representing underserved communities. She has worked on several collaborative research projects that used both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Select research include: examination of the extent to which local governments promote sustainability through existing built environment and land use regulations from the lens of the creative class, University of California Office of President, Carbon Neutrality Initiative-related research examining the role of the building envelope to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and worked on Haynes Foundation funded research examining the effectiveness of form-based codes and traditional zoning codes in Southern California. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Mumbai University, Master of Urban and Environmental Planning from Arizona State University, and Ph.D. in Planning, Policy and Design from University of California Irvine.
