The UC Davis Center for Regional Change (CRC) aims to support youth and adult researchers’ access to and use of data and analyses that may complement their social change efforts—potentially as context, as additive information, and/or as a focus of critique and further development.

Putting Youth On the Map has been working with East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC) and other members of the Sacramento Kids First Coalition (SKFC) to support their youth teams' use of data and maps to build youth opportunity in Sacramento. This news story comes from coverage of a youth training facilitated by the CRC’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Brandon Louie, at Sol Collective in Sacramento.

Ten teams across the University of California were awarded the 2017 Larry L. Sautter Award, and Putting Youth on the Map (PYOM) received the Golden Award for Innovation in Information Technology! PYOM is an interactive website that provides analyses of California youth well-being and curricula to support use of the mapping tool.

Monitoring Community Action to Promote Equity: The San Joaquin County Alliance of Boys and Men of Color worked with the UC Davis Center for Regional Change to report analyses of child and youth well-being in Stockton, CA. This report will support the local response to the White House My Brother’s Keeper initiative. In particular, these analyses provide context for local planning and a baseline for monitoring community progress on the initiative’s six milestones.

Hey, it’s Alondra Young! I am the Building Healthy Communities Youth Engagement Coordinator from Sacramento! I had the privilege of working with the awesome people at the Center for Regional Change last summer, using their Putting Youth on the Map (PYOM) website. In late June, I and other youth leaders from Sacramento hopped on the local city bus and rode up to the UC Davis Campus from Sacramento. We were able to receive an introduction to PYOM, meet CRC faculty, staff and graduate students, and receive a pretty cool campus tour!

I teach an undergraduate course through Chicana/o Studies called Political Economy of the Chicana/o Community every spring quarter. I have three mid-term papers that are opportunities for students to use publicly-accessible data (via websites, mostly) to do some analysis of the education, health, and labor conditions that intersect to shape the political economies of California’s Chicana/o-Latina/o communities.

Last summer, I had an incredible opportunity to work for the UC Davis Center for Regional Change (CRC) as their web designer. While most of my friends were waitressing, getting coffee for their boss, or filing paperwork all day, I was entrusted to design an entire website on my own. From brainstorming to coding to seeing the site go live – I got to be there through it all!
